Opener not working? Here is the fast fix

Most dead openers come down to one of four faults: a stripped drive gear, a failed motor capacitor, a dead logic board, or blocked safety sensors. We diagnose the exact cause on site and fix it the same day, repair from $150.

Before you call, try the manual release and lift the door by hand. If it is heavy or will not move, the problem is not the opener at all. A dead-feeling opener is often a broken garage door spring repair. If the door lifts smoothly by hand but the motor will not run it, the fault is inside the opener and we will be out the same day, usually within hours.

Why won't my garage door opener work?

Openers fail in predictable ways. The sound the motor makes tells you a lot: a hum points to the motor, a grind points to the gears, a few inches of travel points to the limits or sensors, and total silence points to power or the board.

Here are the four faults we see most often on Ottawa openers, and what each one usually means.

Opener hums but the door won't move

A steady hum with no movement is almost always a blown motor capacitor or a stripped drive gear. The motor gets power but cannot turn the trolley, so it sits and buzzes. This is a common, affordable repair from $150.

The capacitor is the part that gives the motor its starting torque, and it weakens with age and cold. The drive gear is a nylon part that meshes with a worm gear inside the head. We replace either one with a gear-and-belt repair kit, and the opener runs like new.

Opener grinds or clicks

A grinding noise while the trolley stays put is a stripped drive gear, the single most common LiftMaster and Chamberlain failure. A single click with no movement is the same gear, or a broken spring loading the motor past its limit.

Stop running the opener once you hear grinding, because each cycle chews the gear further and can overheat the motor. The fix is a drive gear and sprocket kit, a $150 to $220 job depending on the brand, done on the first visit.

Door opens a few inches then reverses

A door that lifts a few inches then drops, or starts to close then reverses, is a travel and force limit problem or a sensor problem. The opener thinks it has hit an obstruction and backs off to protect you.

If it stalls on the way up, the force limit is set too low or a roller is binding in the track. We reset the limits and clear the cause in one visit.

Opener is completely dead

No lights, no hum, no response from the wall console means a power problem or a failed logic board. Check that the outlet has power and the breaker has not tripped first. If power is fine, the circuit board has likely failed.

Logic boards die from power surges and from age, and on units over 12 years old a new board can cost nearly as much as a new opener. If only the remote is dead but the wall button still works, that is a quick garage door remote and keypad reprogramming, not a board failure.
