Garage door capping in Ottawa: aluminum over sound wood trim

Garage door capping covers sound exterior wood trim with formed aluminium. It gives the opening a finished edge and reduces exposed painted wood. Peeling paint or a soft corner needs an assessment before it is covered; capping cannot repair decay or a leaking wall.

What is garage door capping?

Aluminum capping is metal formed to cover the exposed wood trim around a garage door opening. It is also called aluminium cladding or trim wrapping. Sound wood remains underneath, so its condition and the way water drains around it still matter.

Brickmould capping follows the moulding around the opening. The metal is cut and bent with a brake to suit those profiles. The quote should identify the trim faces, corners and returns being covered, along with the selected finish.

Why does trim around a garage door rot in Ottawa?

Wood decay needs moisture. A damaged finish, an open joint or water entering from above can leave trim damp. Capping over an unresolved moisture problem can hide it from view.

Look for soft wood, peeling paint, staining and gaps, especially where the trim meets the driveway. Note whether the area stays wet after the surrounding wall dries. Those signs help decide what needs inspection; they do not identify the full repair from a photo.

How does capping change the appearance of the trim?

These images illustrate exposed painted trim and an aluminium-covered finish. They show the surface change; they do not document the condition of hidden wood or a completed HUSH repair.

A clean outer finish cannot show whether the wood underneath is sound. Ask what was inspected before wrapping and which repairs, if any, were approved separately.

What does capping cover around the opening?

Capping covers the exposed trim along both sides and across the top of the opening. A quote should identify each face being wrapped, including any brickmould or decorative returns. Covering trim across the top does not mean replacing the structural header behind it.

Capping cannot repair rotten wood. Soft or crumbling trim needs a separate assessment before wrapping. Confirm what repair work HUSH can offer and approve that scope in writing; structural framing work is not included in a capping quote.

Choose a finish from the available samples and compare it with the door and surrounding trim. A similar colour name does not guarantee an exact match, especially beside an older finish. Confirm the selected product and colour on the quote.

Is aluminum capping better than painting the trim?

Capping leaves no painted wood to maintain, though the aluminium still needs care. Painting may suit sound trim whose profile you want to keep exposed. Compare preparation, finish, upkeep and the written scope rather than assuming capping is always the cheaper choice.

Follow the care instructions for the product installed. For example, Kaycan’s aluminium care guidance calls for routine cleaning and inspection and warns against abrasive tools. Ask for the instructions for your own finish, and check for loose edges, damaged joints or signs of water behind the wrap.

What affects the cost of garage door capping?

Capping cost depends on the amount of trim, the bends and returns, the finish and site access. The condition of the wood can change whether capping is suitable and whether separate work is needed first.

Measure the full length of trim being covered, not just the width of the door. A decorative profile can require more forming than a flat surround. Ask how hidden damage will be handled if it becomes visible during removal. We quote the agreed capping scope in writing before work starts. Our garage door repair pricing guide explains how we quote other work.

Should you cap the trim while a new door is going in?

Ask for capping as a separate line item when planning a new door. The same visit can be used to assess the trim and compare finishes. Whether the work can be combined, and what it costs, depends on the opening, wood condition and agreed scope.

If you are planning a new garage door, bring the trim into the colour discussion. Review the door material and finish options together with the capping sample before choosing either finish. If the front door is due too, HUSH also handles entry door replacement in steel or fibreglass, and the written quote sets out the door and frame scope.

How long does aluminum capping last?

There is no single lifespan we can promise for every capping installation. The product, coating, exposure, installation details and maintenance all matter. Ask for the named product and its written warranty rather than treating a warranty term as a guaranteed service life.

Water management still matters after the trim is wrapped. Ask how the top edge and surrounding wall shed water, and arrange an inspection if joints open, the wrap loosens or staining appears. The written 90-day Done-Right promise explains our rework cover. We quote capping across Ottawa, Gatineau and the surrounding suburbs.

What should an aluminum capping quote include?

Compare the same scope on each quote: the jambs and header being wrapped, any brickmould returns, the finish, removal of old trim, seal work and repair of damaged wood. A price per opening is only useful when those items are clear.

Quote itemWhat to confirm
Metal and finishColour, profile and which exposed faces are included
Wood beneath the wrapWhether repairs are included or assessed separately after removal
Water and air sealingWhere joints are sealed and how the work meets the existing wall
Site workRemoval, disposal, access requirements and applicable tax

Aluminum wrap, aluminium capping and metal door-frame cladding can describe the same trim work. A new structural header is a different job. If water is already entering the opening, first identify the source of the moisture so a fresh finish does not conceal an unresolved leak.
