Garage Door Parts Explained: What Each One Does
By HUSH Garage Door Service· Updated
A sectional garage door uses panels, hinges, rollers and tracks to guide movement, a spring system to counterbalance its weight, and an opener to drive it automatically. The part names help describe a problem; they do not establish which component has failed.
What are the main parts of a sectional garage door?
The main groups are the door sections, their guiding hardware, the counterbalance system and, where fitted, the automatic opener. A sectional door bends at the joints between its panels as it follows the tracks.
Use this table to identify the component named in a manual or repair estimate:
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| Section or panel | Forms one horizontal part of the door |
| Hinge | Joins sections so they can bend through the track curve |
| Roller | Travels in the track and guides the section |
| Track | Defines the door’s travel path |
| Spring system | Counterbalances the door’s weight |
| Lift cable and drum | Transfer force in the torsion-spring lifting system |
| Opener and drive connection | Move the door under power |
| Weather seal | Closes a gap around or between door components |
Garaga’s parts reference separates these component families. This glossary describes a common sectional arrangement. A rolling curtain, one-piece door or another door design can use different hardware.
Is an overhead door always a sectional garage door?
No. The words describe how a door opens in some contexts, while Overhead Door is also a brand name. Identify the actual manufacturer and construction before interpreting a manual or ordering a part.
A sectional door has hinged panels. A rolling door uses a curtain that coils above the opening. Size alone does not settle which one you have. Keep the door label and a full-door photograph with your enquiry, especially when a supplier asks for a model or section profile.
What do the springs, cables and drums do?
Springs provide counterbalance. On a torsion system, the spring acts through a shaft and cable drums, with lifting cables connected near the lower corners of the door. An extension-spring arrangement uses a different spring and cable layout.
Garaga illustrates both systems in its installation manual. For the torsion components above the opening, our bearings, drums and shafts guide explains their separate roles and matching requirements.
Keep spring fittings, drums, lifting cables and bottom brackets fastened in place. DASMA warns that cable work and bottom-bracket adjustment involve spring tension and belong to trained technicians. See its spring and cable safety guidance. A noise or slack cable is a reason for inspection, not permission to adjust the assembly.
How do rollers, hinges and tracks guide movement?
Rollers move along the tracks, while hinges let the sections change angle. Their condition and alignment affect how smoothly the door travels. A bent track, damaged hinge or worn roller can produce overlapping symptoms, so sound alone cannot identify the replacement.
Roller material or bearing count is not a universal quality ranking. DASMA’s hardware discussion with manufacturers describes why the application and tested rating matter. That historical discussion is used here for the matching principle, not its old lifespan figures.
For a crooked or displaced door, stop using it and arrange inspection of the door and track. Do not hammer a track or loosen its brackets to make the door run again.
Where do you get garage door parts in Ottawa?
Garage door parts in Ottawa come from the door maker’s dealer network or from a repair company that fits them, and the door label decides the part more than the shop does. Bring the label and a full-door photo to any supplier, whether you search for parts nearby or ask a technician.
HUSH carries common springs, rollers and cables on the truck and fits them as part of a repair: rollers from $100, a single spring from $275 and a pair from $400, before HST. Springs, lift cables, drums and bottom brackets are the parts not to buy for a home fit, because installing them means working against spring tension.
For a panel, a hinge or a seal, the match comes from the door’s model and section profile, as the table above shows. Where a brand’s older parts are hard to find, the supplier’s answer on compatibility matters more than a close colour.
What does the opener do, and what are the sensors for?
The opener supplies powered movement and controls travel. A ceiling-mounted trolley opener connects through a carriage and door arm; a wall-mounted design can connect differently. The opener must suit the door system and cannot correct a mechanical fault by using more force.
Photo-eye sensors, where fitted, detect an interrupted beam across the opening and form part of the opener’s safety system. Their required location, indications and response come from the actual opener manual. Keep them unobstructed and do not bypass them.
DASMA explains that a struggling door may have an unsafe mechanical condition in its door safety guidance. If the door or controls behave differently, the opener repair page explains the inspection route.
What do the panels and weather seals affect?
Panels form the moving door surface. Seals close gaps at the floor, frame or section joints. Garaga’s weatherstripping reference distinguishes bottom, perimeter, threshold and inter-panel seals.
A damaged seal and a damaged section need different assessments. A squirrel one-way door is a wildlife exclusion device for a roof or soffit, not a garage door part; where animals chew in at the floor, the bottom seal is the part to replace. A new seal cannot restore weakened panel material, and a replacement section must fit the original door system. Ask the supplier to confirm the match rather than relying on colour and width alone.
When requesting a garage door repair assessment, describe the symptom, where it occurs and any recent impact or change. Include the door and opener labels if safely readable. Let the inspection determine the part and the repair scope.
