Storefronts, mall units and parking garages
Rolling shutters and security grilles in Ottawa
A rolling shutter or a security grille closes a storefront, a mall unit or a garage ramp with a curtain that rolls onto a barrel above the opening. The chosen curtain, locks and mounting need to suit the access requirements at that opening. HUSH installs and services them across Ottawa and Gatineau, and the price follows a site visit rather than a phone call.

What is the difference between a rolling shutter and a security grille?
A solid rolling shutter limits the view through an opening, while an open grille preserves visibility through its lattice. Construction and available infill vary by product. Compare the selected curtain, mounting and operator rather than assuming all shutters or grilles share the same dimensions.
Cornell's rolling-grille range distinguishes open and clear-panel designs and provides product drawings. That is a better basis for comparison than assuming a grille is always lighter or needs less headroom than a shutter of the same opening size.
Record how the closure is used. If it opens once and closes once on each of 365 operating days, that is 365 complete open-and-close cycles. Count any additional movements separately. Compare the measured use with the chosen product and operator ratings; the arithmetic is not a prediction of service life.
Should a storefront get a solid shutter or a see through grille?
Storefront selection depends on visibility, access and the conditions at the opening. An open grille can keep a display visible after closing. A solid curtain may suit an opening where screening the view matters, subject to the building and product requirements.
Decide what people should see through the closed opening. A display window, a storage room and a vehicle entrance can need different treatments. Ask to see the proposed curtain or infill sample and compare the product's stated use with the site.
An open lattice is not a weather seal. For a solid shutter, confirm the selected model's weather exposure and thermal information instead of assuming every solid curtain is insulated. Finish and mounting choices should also be agreed with the property owner before ordering.
How much does a shutter really slow down a break in?
A shutter cannot be assigned a reliable break-in delay from its appearance alone. Resistance depends on the complete product and installation. Ask for any claimed security performance to be supported by the applicable test or rating, rather than a general promise of minutes gained.
Ask the supplier to identify the closure, locks and mounting arrangement in the quote. If a particular resistance rating is important, confirm what product configuration the rating covers. Do not infer that an open grille, a solid shutter or a security label makes an entrance impossible to force.
Include the operating routine in the handover. Staff need the instructions for closing and securing the selected system, and a clear route for reporting a fault. Repair of worn locking or mounting parts should be assessed against the complete assembly. Our terms are set out in our written 90 day Done-Right promise on shutter work.
What do landlords and mall management ask for before a shutter goes in?
Shutter approvals depend on the property and the proposed work. Ask the manager about mounting, appearance, working hours and contractor documents before ordering. Any effect on an exit route, fire separation or ventilation needs the appropriate building review.
Prepare a drawing showing where the closure sits and what it attaches to. Confirm the lease boundary and responsibility for the supporting surface. If the opening needs building work before the shutter can be fitted, identify who designs and completes that work.
A security closure is not automatically a fire-rated closure or an approved exit arrangement. Keep those requirements explicit in the specification. Obtain the property's actual contractor-document requirements; this page does not replace the manager's approval process or certify a proposed installation.
How does a shutter open when the power is out?
Shutter operation during an outage depends on the installed operator and its documented manual or backup provision. Identify that arrangement before using it. A jammed or damaged closure needs assessment even if a chain, crank or release is fitted.
Keep the correct operating instructions available to the staff who use the opening. Cornell publishes separate manuals for different grilles, shutters and operators. A procedure for one system should not be borrowed for another because both have a manual chain.
If staff have not been shown the documented procedure, arrange a demonstration before an outage. Keep any required control or handle accessible. Do not force a reluctant closure, alter its counterbalance or bypass a protective device to get it moving. Backup capability, where fitted, must be checked against that product's instructions.
Where do rolling shutters make sense in a parking garage?
Parking-garage closures control access at vehicle entrances, storage areas or service counters. The selected design must suit the opening and its actual traffic. Visibility and ventilation requirements should be checked with the building team before choosing a solid curtain or grille.
Count actual operating cycles rather than treating every vehicle as exactly one cycle. Some openings serve several vehicles during one open period, while others close between each arrival. Provide that pattern when the door and operator are specified.
Check the floor profile, mounting space and room for service access. Coordinate the access receiver, activation controls and protective devices with the chosen operator. These choices should be documented together instead of assuming a particular voltage or safety-device layout suits every ramp. HUSH assesses the storefronts and garages we cover in Ottawa and Gatineau.
What should you do when a commercial shutter will not open?
Stop using a jammed, damaged or displaced shutter and keep people clear of the opening. Record the shutter and operator models, what still responds and any recent impact. HUSH assesses the fault before recommending a repair, replacement part or wider change.
Cornell's rolling-grille manual says not to operate a jammed or broken closure and reserves installation and maintenance for trained door-system technicians. A working motor or accessible release does not establish that the curtain can move safely.
From a safe position, note whether the closure is locked, whether a control responds and where movement stopped. Mention an impact, power interruption or recent work. Photograph the full opening and readable equipment labels without removing covers or touching the mechanism.
The assessment separates the lock, curtain, guides and operator before choosing the work. A repair may preserve a sound assembly when compatible parts are available; wider damage or unavailable parts can change that decision. Ask the written quote to identify the proposed work and remaining defects. Testing and return to service must follow the installed equipment instructions.
