Garage door paint and rust: when a finish repair is enough

By · Published

Peeling paint and a rusted-through panel need different decisions. Check the panel condition and the door maker's finish instructions before sanding or repainting. Paint can change the appearance of sound material; it cannot restore missing metal or damaged hardware attachments.

Is the damage in the finish or in the panel?

Finish damage affects the coating; structural damage affects the material or the places holding the door together. Look at the full section, not only the orange spot. Photograph the inside and outside of the affected area with the door safely closed.

ConditionDecision to investigateWhy paint alone may fall short
Faded colour on a sound surfaceCleaning or a manufacturer-approved refinishThe finish and warranty may restrict repainting
A scratch exposing steelThe maker’s touch-up procedureBare metal needs the specified preparation
Blisters, deep corrosion or perforationPanel condition and replacement compatibilityPaint does not restore lost material
Damage beside a hinge or bracketHardware attachment and section strengthThe attachment must carry its intended load

This is a way to describe the problem for assessment. Do not remove a hinge, bottom bracket or spring component to investigate underneath it.

What does the manufacturer allow you to paint?

The door model and factory finish determine the preparation, coating and warranty conditions. Steel, aluminum, wood, composite overlays and textured finishes do not share one universal painting method.

Garaga’s painting instructions describe surface preparation and latex finish coats for the door types covered by that page. Garaga states on that page that repainting voids its Limited Lifetime Warranty. It also lists specific restrictions for PVC overlays and textured finishes. Read those restrictions before choosing a colour or a sanding method.

Keep a copy of the warranty supplied with your door and compare it with the current instructions. If they appear inconsistent, ask the manufacturer for the instruction that applies to your model. Do not assume a process written for a plain steel section also applies to a decorative overlay.

Why does rust keep returning near the bottom?

Recurring rust needs its cause checked as well as its appearance treated. Look for standing water, coating damage and repeated contact at the bottom edge. Ottawa winter meltwater makes the threshold and lower section worth inspecting together.

Garage door rust starts the same way on any sheet metal door, single or double: bare steel at a scratch or a cut edge meets water and road salt, and the corrosion spreads under the paint from there.

Wash and inspect the door according to its maintenance instructions. Avoid aggressive products that the finish maker does not permit. If water keeps entering or collecting inside, the guide to leaks and condensation can help identify the next inspection question.

Check whether the problem is on the door skin, the bottom retainer or a separate piece of trim. Those are different components. A new weather seal does not fix a corroded panel, and a new panel does not establish that water is draining away from the opening.

Can you paint a garage door black?

Check the allowed colours and heat-related restrictions for the exact finish and overlay. A colour that is offered on one factory-built model is not proof that repainting another model the same colour is suitable.

Garaga specifically warns about dark repaint colours on certain PVC overlays in its model-specific painting guidance. The same check applies to dark brown and other deep colours, not only black. For a different brand, use that brand’s instructions. Take the model number and a finish sample to the paint supplier so its advice is tied to the actual surface.

If matching the front of the house is the main goal, compare a factory finish with the cost and upkeep of refinishing. The garage door materials comparison explains the broader replacement choice.

How much does it cost to paint a garage door instead of replacing it?

Painting a garage door yourself costs 1 gallon of exterior acrylic latex plus primer, while a new single door installed starts from $1,995 before HST. That gap is why paint is the first question on a sound door and the wrong one on a rusted-through section.

One 3.78 litre gallon covers 2 coats on the outside of a 16 by 7 foot double door, as our steel garage door painting steps work out. A painter’s price adds labour and depends on the prep the finish needs. HUSH does not offer painting, so we do not quote it. Where the damage is in the metal, compare the section and whole-door options below instead.

When is section replacement the better question?

Section replacement deserves consideration when the damage extends beyond the finish, especially around an attachment point. The replacement needs to fit the original door system. Matching the width and colour alone does not establish compatibility.

Ask about the section profile, panel thickness, hardware locations and availability. Also ask how closely a new factory finish will match the weathered sections that remain. For an older door, the answer may depend on whether its series is still supported.

HUSH’s panel replacement page covers that assessment. HUSH has not listed a standalone painting service here. If you contact us about corrosion, send a close view of the damage and a photo of the full door so the repair question is clear.

Frequently asked questions

Can I paint a garage door with a factory finish?
Check the instructions and warranty for that exact door first. Some finishes can be repainted under specified conditions; others carry restrictions or warranty consequences.
Does painting over rust fix the panel?
No. A coating does not replace corroded metal or repair a weak attachment point. Have deep corrosion and damage around hinges or brackets assessed.
Can one rusty garage door section be replaced?
Sometimes. The replacement must match the door system, section profile and hardware. Availability, finish differences and the condition of the other sections affect the decision.

Send photos of the corrosion and the whole door. HUSH can discuss panel repair or replacement; painting is not offered here.
