What is a smart garage door opener and how does myQ work?

A smart garage door opener has built-in Wi-Fi that connects to the myQ app on your phone. The myQ service links the opener to your home network over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, so you can open, close and see the door status from anywhere.

LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers use the same myQ platform and Security+ 2.0 rolling-code security, so a stolen signal cannot be replayed. The opener talks to your router, the router talks to the myQ cloud, and your phone reaches it through the app. We handle the full setup, including connecting it to your Wi-Fi and pairing the remotes and any HomeLink buttons in your car. Smart opener installation starts from $595, with the Wi-Fi LiftMaster opener included, before HST. Hauling your old opener away is an added fee, there are no overtime fees, and financing is available on approved credit.

Can you make my existing garage door opener smart?

An existing garage door opener can be made smart with a myQ hub. Chamberlain lists most openers made after 1993 with a Learn or program button as compatible, including Genie Intellicode models from 1996 on, so a myQ Smart Garage Control adds full app control without a new motor, from about $80 plus install. Openers older than that usually need a complete smart opener instead.

The Smart Garage Control uses a separate hub and door sensor. Setup connects the hub to Wi-Fi, pairs the sensor and links it to the compatible opener through the myQ app. Follow Chamberlain's device-specific setup guide for the matching hub. We test compatibility before recommending it, so you do not pay for a hub that will not work with your unit. If your opener is over 12 years old or already strains, replacing it with a smart belt drive is usually the better value over a hub on a worn motor.

myQ, HomeKit, Alexa and Google Home, what works with what?

myQ works with the myQ app, IFTTT, the Apple Watch, Ring, Amazon Key and built-in car apps, but not with Google Home, Apple HomeKit or Amazon Alexa. Chamberlain ended Google Assistant support in 2023, discontinued its HomeKit bridge, and offers no Alexa skill.

Chamberlain keeps the current list on its myQ integrations support page, which names Google Home and Apple HomeKit as not supported, and that list beats the logos on older boxes. HomeLink buttons in many cars pair with the opener by radio, separately from myQ. For safety, closing the door from the app always sends an alert first and the door beeps and flashes before it moves.
